Love what you do, do what you love. Seems pretty straight forward going in to running ANY business, but never was a truer word spoken on why you really need to love what you do going in to hospitality and tourism businesses. And here’s why.
Shows like Master Chef have done a lot for the cooking and general dining scene, especially doing a ton of great work on educating the general public about food. This is a great thing, but it has also created the illusion of hospitality being a glitzy career choice when it’s anything but... It has portrayed it as a romantic quest, when the reality of running venues is a very different lifestyle indeed.

We all know in Hospitality and Tourism businesses that customer service is one of the key areas of your offering. It’s always at the forefront of the owner’s and the operator’s minds, as bad customer service can be disastrous for a business of any size. We know we need to achieve great customer service in our venues each and every day, but how do we measure that our customers are happy and have enjoyed the experience of being in our venue?
For every 1 customer that complains, there is potentially 9 others that don’t say anything, they just don’t come back… Succession planning is not really a fun topic to talk about; most people don’t like to think about not being in their business, selling their business, or being too sick to run their business. It’s like writing a Will; you know you need to do it, but you put it off as it’s not the nicest thing you’d like to do with your day.
