It’s a fresh new year full of new opportunities and chances to grow your business… yahh, dahh, dahh… Yep, I’m sure you’ve heard if you run a business that the new year is a chance to be strategic, to get planning and set new goals, but what if you’re feeling anything less than inspired? What if 2018 was a busy year, summer holidays were a busy time and now at the end of January you’re thinking, shouldn’t I be feeling inspired and ready to set new goals…? Well firstly don't panic. Sometimes we just don’t have it all together and that’s ok. Feeling the pressure to be starting the year with multiple changes can be exhausting and hard to live up to. Setting goals in your business is one thing, but then there’s also an expectation to set personal goals, etc. etc.
Just thinking about all the goal setting and strategising can be paralysing, particularly on top of the day to day running of your business that is just as relentless as always. So, if you are lacking motivation, how do you get your mojo back and get your head back in the game for a new year? Well there is no one answer for every person, but here are some ideas to get you started: Don’t freak out: So, you haven’t started planning, you haven’t set any goals, and to be honest you are just trying to get through the day to day; that’s ok too. Don’t put the pressure to get it all done on your shoulders. You can always start in February or March even. Make goal planning and strategising fun: It doesn’t need to be boring with spreadsheets and documents that make no sense. Make business planning fun and creative. One of my favourite ways to plan is by doing mind maps where I get a big piece of paper, coloured pens, put on some music, grab a wine, and start writing down all the things I have achieved in the last year, and all the things I would like to achieve in the new year. Make one small daily change: Don’t try and change four or five processes in your business in one hit. It will probably overwhelm the heck out of you and make you give up on all of them. Just like most weight loss plans fail when people try to do all the things at once; change their diet, get to the gym every day, meditate, etc. introducing multiple business goals and changes at once can be super overwhelming so try and do one at a time. Small steps can equal big results. Setting goals and strategy is important for overall business health and growth, but you don’t need to put too much pressure on yourself to have it all set at the start of a new year. Be easy on yourself, and just keep moving forward. KB
